What Iphone video format

Can someone tell me what the Iphone needs for a video format?
I have some personal videos I need to place on my phone. I converted them to 1280 X 720 mp4 and they play fine in iTunes but they will not sync to the phone.
What should I be converting them to?

The easiest way to proceed is usually to use the create iPod or iPhone version command under the Advanced menu in iTunes.
