Voice Disintegration iPhone 3G

I have a 3G running 4.2.1. When I make a call from or near my house the voice quality breaks down after about 5 minutes on a call. The person I called reports that I sound underwater. I have replaced the phone 2X and spend lots of time with AT&T and they report nothing amiss with the service. The call does not drop. I can hear the person I called, they just lose me over time.
