Updated to 4.2.1 lost Apps Pictures Contacts etc. Please help iPhone 3G

Ive read through several posts and theres no clear explanation that ive found stating how to restore this previous information. Ill go back to the old IOS if I have to I just need the information back.
Before updating anything the Iphone was backing itself up on my computer but my restore option only restores it to the original setting. I need to get my apps and information back please. Can some1 divulge this information to me?
