Unlocked iPhone 3G using O2 official unlock-No Service

Hi there,
I purchased a second hand iPhone 3G and had it unlocked by o2 via there website. I got a confirmation message and I also received the message iPhone successfully unlocked in iTunes when I synced it.
I did try afterwards to put a vodafone sim in and got the internet (3G and mobile internet)working without a problem. The reception does show no bars at all and calls are not possible. If I turn of the 3G and the mobile internet I get No Service.
I did a restore and hard reset without success. Phone works fine with the O2 sim card. I also called them up they were telling me that the system says it is unlocked...
Any ideas? Help is much appreciated as I do not know how to get it working...
iPhone is not jail-broken or whatever and on the latest 4.2.1...

Go to a Vodafone shop you may need a new sim if the one you are using is not intended for an iPhone

Hi Peter,
I called them up and they told me it is compatible, it also supports 3G network but maybe that has nothing to do with it. The only thing they said was to upgrade my contract for more internet traffic as I am currently only on 500mb... wont do this anyway until it works... Cheers for answer though
