current iOS firmware 4.2.1
iTunes 10.2.1 (latest)
iPhone 3GS iOS 4

What is your computer? Has your phone ever been jailbroken? If you have a Mac and arent at least on Leopard that is your problem. Although it would be difficult to have iTunes 10.2.1 if yo werent on at least 10.5.4. So Im puzzled. If you are on Windows it must be XP/SP3 or later.
