Running search in map app hides part of app with list of contacts iPhone

On my iPhone 3GS (software 4.1), in the normal Maps app, when I search the neighborhood for some business, I get the results I want on the map, but half the map is often hidden because the top half (or other varying amounts) of the screen is consumed with a list of related contact names. Is there a way to just see the results on the map without the cover-up? I saw a related post suggesting you clear recent searches. I did this and am still having the problem.
