Ring tone downloads from Itunes dont save as ring tones. iPhone 3G

Yet again, I weakened and downloaded a ring tone. Does it appear in ring tones? No way. The damned thing saves as an album track. Not for the first time.
Is there some way I can transfer the track to Sounds, and I can then select it as a ring tone. Asking Itunes is, of course, like asking a child for guidance on why the sun rises in the East.
