Red number of updates on App Store icon iPhone

When I open the App Store on my iPhone 4 and there is an update and I close the App Store again, there is a number badge of how many updates there are. This number disappears after a while and appears again when I open the App Store again. Is that normal? It usually stayed there until I updated the Apps...
