poor podcast audio on iPhone 3

Reply Topic Podcasts that sound fine on the computer have a distinct echo when played on my wifes iPhone. The audio sounds as though it was recorded in an echo chamber. Songs, whether purchased via iTunes (on computer or iPhone) or ripped from a cd, sound fine. The phenomenon applies to podcasts from multiple sources (eg Fresh Air, NPR: Live Concerts, Storynory, TAL).
Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions or ideas? Thanks...
