Phone sends email instead of calling contact iPhone

I have an iPhone 4 and randomly it decides it wants to send an email to a contact instead of calling them. Whether I choose to call the contact from the contacts list or the favourites list or the contacts list in the phone app, makes no difference. It refuses to call the number. It opens the email app instead. Is this a bug?

Thats definitely a bug.
To be honest these are the solutions that may or may not work.
First thing I would try is rebooting the phone by holding the sleep/wake button and home button for 15 seconds until you see the white apple logo.
If that doesnt work I would restore from backup. If that doesnt work I would restore as new. If all else fails take it to your closest apple store they may replace the phone for a working one..

oh well the nearest Apple store is 200 miles away! If I reboot it will it wipe the phone? or is that a restore that does that?

rebooting simply reboots the phone restoring does delete all data
you can also call apple and they will ship out a replacement if need be
