Phone not turning on iPhone 3G

I was told every so often you should turn your phone off so it can reboot. I turned mine off and this time it took extremely long to shut off. Then, when I tried to turn it on, the Apple logo comes up for a few seconds then shuts off again. Can anyone help me please?

Plug it into the wall adapter to charge. Leave it on for about an hour and try to start it.
