People I call via voice-only phone cannot hear me iPhone

For the past month, I have been experiencing a strange problem with my iPhone 4. When I call someone via voice-only phone or when someone call my iPhone, they cannot hear me. Everything I say appears to be echoed back within the iPhone.
The microphone works and I experience the problem only during voice only phonecalls. I can record voice memos. I can speak to people via skype calls, with or without video. The microphone behaves normally during facetime calls as well.
I have switched off bluetooth. I have tried solving the problem by switching bluetooth on and off to make sure that the iPhone did not work on the assumption it is connected to a headset. Connecting the headset that came with my iPhone does not change the behaviour of my iPhone during voice-only calls. I have tried switching the mute button on and off again but that did not change the behaviour of the iPhone either.
I have an iPhone subscription with O2 and plenty of call time left on my subscription. My bills are always paid on-time.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem, started yesterday. I restored factory settings. calls worked ok when all data was erased, but when I restore from backup the problem comes back (I make/receive calls and person at other end cant hear me). I went to genius bar today, they reset the firmware. Again, calls worked fine whilst all data was erased, but now that I have restored from backup the problem is back. Shaking the phone does temporarily fix the problem. Im considering my next move and thinking about restoring factory settings then choosing the new phone option rather than restore from backup. But I think I will lose all my contacts so this is not a very appealing option. Suggestions welcomed.
