Pairing iPhone 3GS with MacBook Pro without tethering

I am trying to pair the two devices to no avail.
In order to pair them does tethering need to be switched on? Id cant switch it on as it costs me an extra amount per month on the phone bill and all i really wanted to do is send texts from the mac through the phone using a widget I downloaded.

You can only pair your phone to your computer to tether. File transfer or syncing by bluetooth is not supported, so unless youre tethering, you can quit trying as you cant pair your phone with your computer for any other purpose other than tethering.
