Old MMS Pictures wont load iPhone 4

Im sorry if Im repeating a previous topic, I couldnt find it anywhere else.
I was going back in my texts and noticed that pictures other people have sent me are not showing up. Theres the usual blue arrow but when I tap on it all I get is a black screen. Is there any way to recover these photos or are they gone?
