New iphone phone keeping same number

Greetings all! Upgraded to iphone 4 from iphone 3gs....keeping my old number....have synced up new phone on itunes but still have the no service on the top of the phone, will I have to DEactivate my old iphone, before I can get service usage on my new one?...if so how do I do that? Many thanks!
