Just ran latest update getting restore phone iPhone 3G

When I connected my phone I got a message saying that I needed to upgrade. I started the upgrade and received a message saying that I needed to restore. Im so upset. I need the photos that are on my phone. Is there anything I can do to get the photos before I restore? I powered down my phone and now when I turn on my phone I get the image of the USB cable indicating it wants me to connect to ITunes.
I tried to launch Photoshop to see if could recognize the phone and Im not have any luck.
I just took some photos and was about to download them!! Arghhh..

First thing done when you update iPhone software is an iPhone backup. Look in iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices. What is the date of your last iPhone backup?
