iPhone phone tethering issues with 4.2.1

I updated my iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 two days ago and tethering with a USB cable no longer works. I am paying for tethering so this is not an issue. My phone has never been jail broken or unlocked. It is stock Apple all the way. I have gone to Setting-General-Network-Internet Tethering and it is On.
The funny thing is, I set up Bluetooth tethering when my old way (USB) of tethering and it works. I want to go back to using the USB cable.
I am trying to tether my MacBook Pro which has 10.6.5 on it. I have gone into Network Preferences and had no luck there. I got an error message about the USB cable not being connected properly.

I had a similar issue (but couldnt tether with bluetooth) after banging my head against said computer i thought to check whether the phone update had changed any settings. Sure enough, the update to 4.2 had turned off tethering on the iPhone. Once I turned it back on again, deleted the existing bluetooth connection and reconnected the phone and computer life has been rosie!
