I have encountered a crash that I am unable to resolve. Using the latest iPhone OS 3.1.2 software, my iPhone OS crashes hard when using the search functionality. The problem is encountered as I begin typing a letter for the search string. When the crash occurs, it is using the same letter to begin the search string. If my search begins with the letters, c, d, m, p, s, or t, the crash occurs. The crash causes some white horizontal lines to populate the screen, followed by a reboot of the device. It remains on the Apple logo for about 10 minutes as the OS verifies the integrity of the flash partition.
Now, the reason I have posted this issue is because of the way it is reproduced. First, the iPhone OS is reinstalled via the Restore button on the iTunes Summary page. The iPhone is configured as a new device and is not restored via a backup. I then turn off syncing for all user data and only sync the iPhone applications onto the device. After about 4 hours, when the syncing is complete, simply searching and using one of the above letters causes the hard crash to occur again. I have reproduced this problem on an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 2G.
Any suggestions on how I might resolve the problem? Clearly, the applications being populated are somehow exposing this issue. I have not been able to isolate the problem down to one faulty application.

in the prehistoric palmpilot days i used the following system to determine which free application that i downloaded was causing my palm to crash..
restore as new (which you have done)
then install 1/2 of your apps (i used to go alphabetically to keep it simple)... if the iphone crashes then you know it is in one of the 1st 1/2. then i deleted 1/2 of the first 1/2 if it crashed i knew it was in the first 1/4 of the apps if it didnt then i knew it was in the second half of the apps. i kept installing 1/2 of remaining apps and using the same process until the offending app was found.
fyi..this shouldnt be happening if your phone isnt jailbroken..

Thanks for the suggestion. That exact divide-and-conquer plan occurred to me over Thanksgiving holiday. I must confess that the thought of performing this test on 600 applications is daunting.
Also, none of the systems under test were jailbroken.
As an aside, what I find quite concerning is that the kernel itself crashes. It seems odd to me that a crash in an application-level program could actually crash the kernel on the iPhone. I am only searching for an application, nothing fancy.

Solution: Settings > General > Home > Search Results > Un-check everything except Applications.

Highly recommended workaround:
1. Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
2. Settings > General > Home > Search Results > Un-check everything + Check Applications.
3. Power Off your iPhone + Power On your iPhone.
4. Test searching with the letters, c, d, m, p, s, or t.
