iPhone Dock Connector Fell out

Ive just had a friend phone up (via landline!) to ask about what can be done for the following problem.
The iPhone got the connector plugged in, with usual force, and it didnt charge instantly. So they left it for a short while and noticed it still wasnt charging so they removed the connector and the two prongs inside of the phone came with it.
Theyve only had the phone for around 10 months.
I instantly suggested making an appointment at the Apple store, but what might happen?
Ive got a feeling that itll be covered since it wasnt forced / dropped etc - but Ive never had to deal with the Genius Bar in terms of a knackered iPhone.
