iphone audio out both ports stopped working

Hello,
I have an iphone 3GS. My audio out has stopped working. Headphones donet work and the Kickerbox docking speakers I have dont work. It sounds like a muffled scratchy LP record. There has been no damage to the phone and I have tried more than one set of headphones. Any idea what to do? I updated the phone and now it seems its less muffled but still scratchy.
