iPhone apps not syncing to iTunes

I am not computer savvy at all and need help. Have iPhone, but use it just as an iPod right now. When I try to sync my iPhone apps to iTunes, it tries to update then with the apps that are already in iTunes, which there are none so it wants to erase all of them. I updated iTunes to version 10, but after syncing, there are still no apps in iTunes. I just want to update some of my apps and I have been searching for days for the answers. Please help and thanks
