iPhone 4-How to StopQuit iPod

Total iPhone noob question ahead...
Ive used iPods for years, but have only recently begun using my iPhone (which Ive had for 10 days now) as an iPod. My question is: how the heck do I stop/quit the iPod? I can pause the current song, but cant otherwise find a way to quit per se.
A couple times now, Ive been surprised when I plug in my headphones and find my music playing. Great, I think. How the heck long has THAT been running?
Am I missing something? Is pause all thats possible/necessary?

Pausing the track is all you need to do. The iPod app can run in the background, so if you dont pause the track, it will continue to play while you switch to another application (most apps, anyway; some need the audio and so will automatically stop playback of the iPod app).

Double tap the home button, that will bring up the multitasking bar, you can completely close the iPod app here, or swipe left to right & bring up the iPod controls where you can pause the app.

Pause is how you stop the ipod from playing. it is that simple.
