iPhone 3GS screen blacks out when phone answered

My iPhone has start blacking out the screen during calls. It will stay that way for many seconds and makes it impossible to call up screen to enter responses required by some calls. It seems to happen when I pick up phone to answer it or move it during calls. Also cant access speaker when screen blacks out. But calls requiring a keypad response will hang up before screen activates.
