IPhone 3GS Factory UNLOCKED No Service on 3

Hi
I have an iPhone 3GS , Factory unlocked, that use to be on 02. Have tried Orange SIM, and works fine. I have upgraded it fresh using itunes to 4.2.1 with a three SIM in it, and it said registered after a small wait. I then had 4 bars of signal with three, and another phone on three next to it to compare bars. The iPhone then drops to No Service, and searching... After half an hour or so, signal returns to 3 or 4 bars, then searching... The other HTC phone is constantly having signal however, at the same time.
There is also no ability to use the mobile internet at all. Only ever a small little circle that comes up next to the signal bar. I checked settings general network and have mobile data on as an option, but nothing to alter APN which I am informed means that 4.2.1 has installed the APN correctly.
I am baffled what it going on, and assume it must be the Three SIM :/ ? I have rang Three and they say its the iPhone, and a new sim wont matter.
I should also say when the signal IS there, I can text and call fine. It just drops all the time for no reason without moving the phone, from 4 bars to no service.
Any ideas greatly appreciated?

Have you restored and got the message that Congratulations your phone is unlocked as o2 do not do factory unlocked phoned. It needs to be authorised by o2 and then processed by Apple.
If you have and it is working with the other networks then it is going to come down to either a dodgy 3 sim or just the 3 coverage in your area.
