iPhone 3G-WiFi in standby mode

Ive seen various pieces of information on the message boards around the Internet, but nothing definitive.
When the iPhone screen is off... does WiFi stay connected in a powersave mode? If not, is there anyway to force it to? Its a huge pain (And power drain!) to have the device on the cellular network, when there is a perfectly good WiFi network here.

No, not unless the iPhone is connected to a power source.
If not, is there anyway to force it to?
No.
