imap email account not syncing on iphone

I have a number of imap based email accounts on my iphone. These do not seem to sync with the server (i.e. if I read on server, the email still shows as unread on the phone).
This used to work, but for about a year, it hasnt (since I got my iphone 4 maybe). I am currently running the latest version of IOS 4.3
Any ideas?
