How to add video songs in iPhone 3GS 32 GB

Hi! Im using iPhone 3GS with 32GB of capacity and with software version 4.3.1. On the other hand Im using iTunes version 10.2.1.1. I was wondering if someone can please direct me to a link at apples website which shows how to upload the video songs onto iPhone (if its available on website) or can help me how to do that.
The situation is that everytime I try to upload HD video songs it pops up a message in iTunes which states Abc song was not copied to the iPhone because it cannot be played on this iPhone. I cant even sync SD (Simple Definition) video songs to iPhone.
Can someone please tell me is there only specific video format which is aceptable by iPhone? Second, can we sync and play HD (High Definition) songs on iPhone or not?

Where did the videos come from?
What format are they?
The manual shows compatible formats.
Iphone 3GS does not support HD.
