I had the understanding that hosting an iPhone Application requires a cloud service not like a website that requires a hosting server. Currently I have an iPhone Social Networking Application under development by a programmer who only demands a normal hosting server that facilitates php/mysql files.
My question is, would that do the job?

Unless you intend this app to be available only to a relatively small number of users (100 maximum), or you work for a company and are developing an app for in-house use, the app must be released through Apples App Store. Theres no way to host and distribute an app yourself if you intend it for general release. If 100 users is all you intend, log into your developer account with Apple and look for Publishing Your Application for Testing in the iOS Development Guide.
I dont know why a developer would be insisting on an SQL server being available. Im not an expert, but nothing I can see in the distribution process for test apps requires an SQL server.

The Application is not intended for a small group at all and it is not for in-house use. It is similar to Personals Applications and of course will be released through App Store.
I am not a developer or a programmer, but I hired one to do the Application along with a website about it who said a normal web hosting service would do the job!

The app itself can be placed on a normal web site for download (again, I dont understand the reference to SQL) but any testers must obtain from you, or the developer, a provisioning profile before they can install the app. The developer youre working with should be able to provide you with further details.
