Google Maps and GPS iPhone 4

I have downloaded the google app on my phone, within this is Google maps. When I open the map and click on the button to establish my location i get the message Your current location is unavailable. If I instead click the maps app that is already on the phone my location is found instantly via the gps. Can anyone advise whether this is an issue with Google maps? I cant find any way of setting gps or configure google maps to work with gps.

Settings>General>Location Services...are yours on or off? Google app on or off?
