I noticed about a week ago that my iPhone 3G (which is now over a year old, and so I guess out of warranty) has a crack on the back next to the dock connector. Worse, its growing.
Is this a common fault? Maybe a design fault? Will Apple repair it for free or will they want a small fortune for it? And can it be repaired quickly?

Apple does not offer an a la carte repair menu. They will off you an out of warranty replacement for $199.
You could try google for 3rd party repair shops.
