Copy old IPhone contacts and calendars to new iPhone

I bought a new iPhone last week to replace my 2-year old iPhone after I dropped it and damaged the screen -- no other damage. The new iphone works OK -- except that retrieving my contact and calendar content is impossible, un-Apple-like. I tried finding a way from Apple manuals, used iTunes, visited an Apple genius at my Philadelphia downtown store. Followed directions -- no go. Phone works but my calendar and contacts are gone. They remain on the old iphone with its cracked screen so i can find what I need. But am i the only one who bought a replacement iPhone and cannot retrieve calendar and contact content? Note I am a PC user. I do not have calendar content saved on MS Office. I depended on iPhone.
