Cant copy photos from my iphone to computer

When my iphone is connected to my computer, it will sync and backup, but it wont copy my iphone pictures over to iphoto on my computer. Nothing RE my iphone photos shows up during the sync (other than saying the number of pictures I have). The last time I backed up pictures was the end of August, so this is something that developed in the last month or so. I know there is 3rd party software that will help transfer stuff (at my expense), but I want to know why the phone isnt doing it on its own.

Photo album pics are synced one way - computer to iphone.
Camera Roll Pics ( pics taken with iphone) are not part of the sync process. You need to import them as you would from any digital camera.
