backup file password iPhone

Hi guys
I backed up my iPhone 3G last year and password-protected the backup file. Unfortunately I cannot remember the password!
I backed it up again last night and now ALL my stuff from the iPhone is gone!
Is there a way of getting Apple / iTunes to email me the password?
Else my only other choice is to set up my iPhone as a new phone on the PC - what will happen to my data if I do that?
I would really appreciate your help.

My understanding is if you dont know the password there is no way to get it with the exception of brute force (which is not even a vaguely realistic option). Setting it up as a new phone will wipe anything on it, assuming you have been syncing stuff like addresses and such youll be able to easily put those back on the phone.

If you cant remember the password for encrypting your iPhone password, you will first have to delete any and all backups on your computer: iTunes>Preferences>Devices, delete all backups listed. Then, restore your phone as a new device in iTunes. All data on your phone will be lost. Follow restoring your phone as a new device by syncing your content back to your phone. There is no other way around this, and no Apple cant/wont help you.
