Added Hotmail account to iPhone retrieving ALL messages can it stop

Just added my hotmail account to my new Verizon iPhone.
When I did this to my Blackberry, it started receiving all new email messages from the time I added the email address.
On the iPhone, its retrieving all messages that are in my in-box. I currently have 9,355 emails in my in-box. Not very good at deleting/categorizing my hotmail...
Is there a way to change the setting to only allow for my iPhone to receive new emails the way my Blackberry defaulted?
I called Verizon tech support, and they wanted me to just go into settings -> Mail/contacts/calender -> Mail/Show... Doing this only changes the number of emails it will show at once... Hmmm....

Different from a Blackberry, the iPhones Mail app communicates direct with the incoming mail server for an email account no different from accessing the account with an email client on your computer. This is the default behavior when creating an existing POP account with any email client. Create the account as a POP account with a new email client on your computer or with an email client on a new computer and the very same would occur. All received messages that remain at the incoming mail server will be downloaded as new and unread messages.
It is also possible to access a Hotmail account as an Exchange account with the iPhones Mail app since Microsoft Google in this regard. It is also possible to access a Gmail account as an Exchange account with the iPhones Mail app.
