Hello,
I purchased an Iphone 3GS on eBay a few weeks ago, I managed to get it up and running after a little wrestling with it, as I wasnt aware of which network it was locked to.
Now Im getting a problem with dropped signal and the No service notice on the top left hand corner of the screen. The reception is fine when the Iphone is laying down and not being touched, but once I pick the phone up it suddenly forgets that its a phone.
I thought that my phone was the problem, I then contacted eBay and paypal and asked them to intervene, with the hope that I can return the phone and get my money back, but the hopes of that happened are slim as I was away from the computer yesterday and therefore couldnt give them any more statements, leaving the seller ample opportunity to lie about me jailbreaking the Iphone (All I want is a phone and ipod, I have no need for games, etc, so theres no reason for me to jailbreak it or unlock it.
Anyway.
This isnt just happening with me as Ive googled it and scores of people are suffering from this very same problem, both on YouTube and on forums.
Thank you.

There is either a problem with the SIM card which can be easily exchanged, a problem with the software, or a problem with the hardware.
To rule out a software problem, restore the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone.
If no change after doing so and the same with a new SIM card, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

If you are getting loss of signal you need to investigate a bit. How strong is the signal when you receive signal? Does the problem occur everywhere, or only certain locations? If the signal is weak picking up the phone will shield the antenna with your hand reduce the signal further. If you still have the problem when you have 5 bars theres something broken in the phone.
